How to sign a PDF

  1. Open your PDF above. The Sign tool is already selected and the signature pad opens.
  2. Make your signature. Draw it, type your name and pick Loose or Cursive, or upload a photo of your signature on white paper.
  3. Tap where it goes. It lands centred on your tap. Switch to Select to nudge it or drag the corner to resize.
  4. Add the date with the Date tool, and your initials on other pages if the document asks for them.
  5. Download PDF. The signature is written into the page itself, so it looks the same in every viewer.

An honest word on what kind of signature this is

PDF Notepad places an image of your signature on the page, the digital version of signing a printout and scanning it back. That is exactly what most everyday paperwork asks for: a permission slip, a lease renewal, a timesheet, a delivery note.

It is not a certificate-based digital signature of the kind produced by Adobe Acrobat Sign, DocuSign or a government ID card. Those attach a cryptographic seal that proves which certificate signed and whether the file changed afterwards. If the sender requires one, or the stakes are high (property purchase, loan, court filing), use the service they specify.

Tips for a signature that looks right

  • Size it to the line. A real signature is usually 1–1.5 cm tall on paper; the editor places it about 5 cm wide, so shrink it if the line is short.
  • Use navy or blue ink if the recipient needs to tell the signed copy from a photocopy; black if the form says "black ink only".
  • Uploading a scan? A PNG with a transparent background sits cleanly on lines. A JPG photo keeps its white rectangle, which is fine on plain paper but covers ruled lines.
  • Sign every page that asks. Lease agreements often want initials on each page; place your initials once, then use the same signature again from the Sign tool.

Is a signature added here legally binding?

In many situations an image signature is accepted: the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation both recognise simple electronic signatures, and landlords, schools and employers often just want a signed copy back. It is not a certificate-based digital signature, though, so it cannot prove who signed or that the file was not changed afterwards. For contracts where that matters, or where the other side requires a specific service, use that service.
