How to write on a PDF

  1. Open the PDF; the Text tool is selected.
  2. Pick size, font and colour in the toolbar. 10–12 pt matches most printed forms.
  3. Tap and type. Enter adds a line. Tap outside to finish.
  4. Select to adjust. Drag to move; drag the round corner handle to make the text bigger or smaller. Double-tap text to edit it again.
  5. Download PDF.

Fixing a typo in an existing PDF

You can't click into a PDF's own words and retype them the way you would in Word. The file doesn't store "a paragraph"; it stores instructions like "draw these glyphs at this exact position". Change one word and everything after it would need re-positioning, which only the original authoring app can do reliably.

The dependable workaround takes ten seconds: choose Whiteout, drag over the wrong word, then choose Text and type the correction on top in a matching size. For a wrong number in a sensitive document, use Redact instead, because Whiteout only covers the old text.

Which font to pick

  • Sans (Helvetica) for forms and anything that should look typed by a computer.
  • Serif (Times) to blend into letters, contracts and academic papers.
  • Typewriter (Courier) for aligning characters in boxes, like the one-letter-per-square fields on some official forms.

Questions people ask

How do I type on a PDF?

Choose Text, tap where the words should start and type. Press Enter for a new line. Tap elsewhere to finish, then use Select to drag the text into place.

Can I match the font of my document?

Choose Sans (Helvetica), Serif (Times) or Typewriter (Courier). These are the three standard PDF fonts every reader has, so your text looks identical everywhere. Exact matching of a document's custom font isn't possible without the font file.

How do I replace existing text in a PDF?

Drag a Whiteout box over the old words, then add new text on top. This is the reliable way in any browser editor, because PDF text is stored as positioned glyphs rather than editable paragraphs.

Can I type in other languages?

Yes. Latin text is written as real, selectable PDF text. For scripts the standard PDF fonts don't cover (Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic, emoji), the editor writes your text as a sharp image so it still appears correctly.
