What you can do in this editor

Fix its text

Edit existing text: tap a line and retype it. Scans? Extract the text with AI OCR.

Write on it

Mark it up

Highlight, draw freehand and pin sticky comments that open in Acrobat, Preview and Chrome.

Fill and sign

Fillable fields are detected automatically. Sign by drawing, typing or uploading a scan.

Keep notes

A notepad per page, saved in your browser, exportable as Markdown or as PDF comments.

Cover or remove

Whiteout hides a typo; Redact removes sensitive text for real.

Add pictures & links

Place a logo, stamp or photo, draw arrows and boxes, and make areas clickable.

How to edit a PDF online in four steps

  1. Open the file. Drop it on the clipboard above or press Choose PDF. It loads from your disk into this tab.
  2. Pick a tool. Text, Edit existing text, Draw, Shapes, Highlight, Sign, Link and the rest sit in the dark toolbar. The line under it tells you what a tap will do.
  3. Adjust. Switch to Select to move or resize anything you added. Undo with Ctrl/⌘+Z.
  4. Download. Your browser builds a new PDF and saves it as yourfile-edited.pdf. The original is untouched.

Why "no upload" matters for a PDF editor

The PDFs people edit in a hurry are rarely boring: leases, tax forms, medical intake sheets, bank letters, HR paperwork. Most online editors send that file to their server to process it, and keep it for hours or days under their retention policy. Here the processing happens on your own device with two open-source libraries, Mozilla's pdf.js for display and pdf-lib for writing. There is nothing to delete afterwards because nothing was sent.

What this editor deliberately does not do: combine or split files, or convert PDFs to images or Word. It does one job, writing on a PDF.

What happens inside the file when you edit

Knowing how a page is built explains what any editor can and cannot change.

Questions people ask

Is this PDF editor really free?

Yes. There is no trial, no watermark, no page limit and no account. The editor is a static web page that does all the work in your browser, so there is no server bill per file to pass on.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Your PDF is read with pdf.js and saved with pdf-lib, both running inside the browser tab. You can open the editor, switch off Wi-Fi and it keeps working. The only optional network call is the AI helper, which sends just your typed notes or the form field names, never the PDF.

Can I edit the existing text in my PDF?

Yes, line by line: choose "Edit existing text", tap the words and retype them. The old line is covered and your text is placed at the same size and position. Whole paragraphs don't re-flow, because PDFs store text as placed glyphs; for big rewrites edit the source document. Scanned pages have no text to tap; use Scan to text (AI OCR) or Whiteout + Text.

Is there a truly free PDF editor with no sign-up and no watermark?

This one: no account, no email, no watermark, no daily task limit and no file-size cap other than your device's memory. Many well-known online editors limit free use to a few tasks per hour or ask you to sign in to download.

Is it safe to edit a PDF online?

It depends where the file goes. Upload-based editors copy your document to their servers and delete it later under their retention policy. PDF Notepad never uploads it: pdf.js and pdf-lib run inside your browser tab. The only optional network calls are the AI buttons, which send just the page image (Scan to text), your note text, or form field names.

How do I edit a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Open it in a browser editor like this one, or use built-in tools: Preview on Mac (Tools → Annotate) and Microsoft Edge on Windows can add text, drawings and signatures. For filling forms, real redaction, links and editing existing text, a browser editor covers more.

Can I add links, arrows and shapes?

Yes. The Shapes tool draws arrows, lines, boxes and ellipses in any of five colours and four widths, and the Link tool makes any area clickable for a website or email address.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The toolbar scrolls sideways, you can draw a signature with your finger, and form fields show the phone keyboard. For long documents a tablet or laptop is more comfortable.

What happens to the fillable fields when I download?

By default the answers are flattened into the page so they look the same in every viewer. Untick "Flatten on download" in the Form panel if the recipient needs to keep editing them.

Is there a file size limit?

Only your device's memory. Documents of a few hundred pages open fine on a laptop; pages render as you scroll so memory stays reasonable.
